Received a Call From James Snell Asking for Money?

|

We have recently been contacted by an individual reporting that our law firm was representing the parent of a child who had provided illegal pictures to a man met through a dating site. The caller pretends to be “James Snell” or “James R. Snell, Jr.” and identifies himself as an attorney. This caller requests money in order to avoid criminal charges and/or litigation being brought.

These calls are complete, total scams. No one at the Law Office of James R. Snell, Jr., LLC, including attorney James Snell, has ever called anyone asking for money under these circumstances.

You should not ever send any money to these sorts of callers. You should also not ever provide them with any personal information.

We recommend that anyone that receives this type of call report it to the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357. We have reported this scam to them and they are currently cataloging further instances.

You are also welcome to report any similar communications you receive directly to us by calling us directly at (888) 301-6004.

Update:

We have learned that this scam is likely being operated by inmates at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (and possibly other prisons around the country) using contraband cell-phones. If you have been contacted we also encourage you to make a report to your local law enforcement agency as well as the Federal Trade Commission. You are also welcome to contact our office if you have been contacted by anyone pretending to be James Snell or another employee here. We are forwarding reports we receive to law enforcement.
